Pod Count

Chillies from seed on a kitchen windowsill, then out to a small greenhouse by June.

About

I grow chillies from seed every year, starting them in late January on a shelf in the boiler cupboard, moving them to the kitchen windowsill as seedlings, and then out to a six-by-eight greenhouse at the end of a small garden once the nights stop dropping below ten degrees. Somewhere between eight and fifteen plants make it to fruit, depending on how badly I misjudge the spring.

These pages record what happened each season: germination times by type, the leggy seedlings, the aphids, the harvest weights and the pods that never ripened. I am not after record heat or rare varieties. I want a windowsill of pods in September and enough to dry for the winter.
